Paramedic Program Philosophy

As the healthcare field grows, faces changes, and makes advances, so do our programs at the ALS Institute. The traditional role of paramedics as critical care providers practicing in a "street medicine" setting is being challenged. A number of healthcare systems in our country have embraced the utilization of paramedics in nontraditional roles and settings. The ALS Institute's candidates will be trained not only to provide emergency care in the street and wilderness settings, but also to provide "primary care" for patients at home, in clinics or private practices, and in the hospital.

Paramedic Program Options

Modular Paramedic Program

In this format the ALSI paramedic curriculum is broken up into twelve subject areas or "modules" that are each five days long. The modures are offered monthly on a Monday to Friday schedule over one year with classes running from 8 AM to 6 PM daily. Every effort is made to schedule modules for the same week of each month for ease in planning. Students will have the choice of doing their clinical time concurrent with classroom time within a year or they may elect an additional year to complete the clinical and field objectives. Often students choose a combination completing the entire program in approximately 18 months. Clinical sites are located across New England, so students entering the program should be prepared to travel. Clinical and Field internship sites include a variety of busy urban and suburban locales to offer a broad-based education. Students will also experience all models of EMS services: hospital-based, public utility, and third-service. Upon successful completion of our program, students will be eligible to sit for the National Registry Paramedic Board Exam.

One Day per Week Paramedic Program

This intensive year-long program is designed to give EMT-Intermediates the opportunity to pursue Paramedic level education within reach of the rural areas of New Hampshire and Vermont. This program is identical in curriculum and hours to the modular program, but is offered one day a week with five additional classes required during the year. Students will complete a succession of classes that fall into a topic area or "module" such as (pediatrics). As in the modular program, students will have the choice of completing their clinical time concirrently with their classroom time within the year or they may take an additional year to complete the clinical and field objectives. Upon successful completion of our program, students will be eligible to sit for the National Registry Paramedic Board Exam.

Accelerated Paramedic Program

This fast paced program is designed for Navy and Air Force Special Forces Medics (SEALS/Pararescuemen) and others with previous professional healthcare experience (RNs) or those with strong academic medical backgrounds. This individually tailored program will run six days a week for a minimum of 14 weeks. The length of the course for PJs and SEALS will be 14 weeks. The length of the course for others is dependent on validation of prior learning. Three days a week will be spent in class and the other three days in clinicals. The program will culminate in an urban field internship. Upon successful completion of our program, students will be eligible to sit for the National Registry Paramedic Board Exam.
